SECASA’s Children, Young People and Families Team provides specialist sexual assault/family violence/harmful sexual behaviour therapeutic interventions for children and young people up to 18 years of age. Our team provide trauma informed, strength and evidenced based, responsive counselling for children and young people.
Our overarching program aim is to provide you with a safe place to understand you/ your child’s experiences, as well as and help to manage and reduce the impacts of those experience.
With referrals for concerns regarding harmful sexual behaviour, there is also the intention to build the skills and knowledge needed to help the young person engage in safe behaviours and respectful relationships in the future.
The initial sessions will be an assessment together; to understand your hopes, gain an understanding of the child/young person’s background and the current situation.
We will work with you and your child to create goals for counselling which address your and your child’s hopes. These goals will regularly be reviewed within counselling.
From the time we begin working with your family, safety will be held in mind and conversations will be regularly had with yourself and your child about safety for themself and others.
Caregivers and/or families of children/young people engaging in the service are required to be involved in all aspects of the assessment and intervention. We acknowledge the significant impact that sexual assault/ family violence and harmful sexualised behaviours can have on carers, ensuring that they too receive support.
Your counsellor will discuss, the outcome of the assessment, the goals and counselling approach with their supervisor and their team as part of our shared-care model. This ensures you have the support and knowledge of a whole team of specialist counsellors as part of your care. You are welcome to have a copy of the goals.
